In Memoriam: Charles V. Tompkins, Jr.
1936–2026

We are saddened to share the loss of Charles V. "Charlie" Tompkins, Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina, who passed away on April 5, 2026. Charlie was a pillar of the North Carolina legal community, a former President of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys (NCADA), and a mentor to countless legal professionals.

Charlie was among the founding members of the NCADA, joining in 1978 following its inception in 1977, and serving as President from 1989 to 1990. A trial lawyer admired for his sharp intellect, unwavering sense of fairness, and compassionate approach to advocacy, Charlie focused his practice on defending catastrophic medical malpractice cases throughout North Carolina. He was a key figure at Kennedy Covington, which later merged with Womble Carlyle and became Womble Bond Dickinson.

Charlie was more than a skilled attorney; he was a source of inspiration for those fortunate enough to work alongside him. His humility, leadership, and respect for others were hallmarks of his character. Jim Cooney, who practiced with Charlie for 17 years, shared:

"Charlie taught me not only how to try a case but how not to try a case. For him, trial work was an exercise in compassionate communication, steady advocacy, trust, and humility. He often reminded me that we were only as good as our next case. In 17 years, I never saw him berate an opponent nor take glee in winning a case, particularly when a serious injury was involved. Charlie taught me that my word was my bond, and everything I said in a courtroom was how I would be measured. He was one of the giants of our Bar."

Charlie’s collegiality extended far beyond those he worked with directly. Clark Smith recalled:

"Charlie was a top trial attorney in the state, a member of a prestigious firm, and a Harvard graduate, yet he never bragged or gave off an air of arrogance. He truly embodied humility and humanity, always coming across as a good ole boy from North Carolina. I will always remember him as a great lawyer, a great man, and a great mentor."

Even for lawyers who were his co-defendants, Charlie exemplified the professionalism and respect that all members of the legal field aspire to display. Mel Garofalo shared:

"Although I was 17 years younger than Charlie, he always treated me as an equal, with respect and professionalism. His example should serve as the gold standard of how to practice law—and what we should hope our legacy will be."

Charlie’s legacy is one of integrity, compassion, mentorship, and excellence in advocacy. He was a trusted colleague, a generous teacher, and a steadfast friend. We honor Charlie's memory by continuing the values he championed — compassion, respect, and humility in the practice of law. He will always be remembered as one of the true giants of our Bar.
